Meaning · English
Krishna said: Mighty-armed one, undoubtedly the mind is restless and difficult to restrain. But by practice, son of Kunti, and by detachment, it can be controlled.
Krishna begins by agreeing with Arjuna, with no argument. Undoubtedly, he says, the mind is hard to hold. The word durnigraha joins dur, hard, with nigraha, holding back, the way a rein holds a horse. Chala means shaking, never still. He calls Arjuna mighty-armed, a man strong in the arms, and the title hints that this kind of strength does not hold a mind. Then comes the "but" and two tools. Abhyasa is practice, the act of placing oneself at the same thing again and again. Vairagya is detachment, from vi and raga: the colour, the staining pull of attachment, drained away. One tool brings the mind back; the other loosens whatever keeps dragging it off. Krishna calls Arjuna son of Kunti, a close, family name, and says the mind can be taken hold of, which is what grihyate literally says. His reason is Arjuna's own complaint: the difficulty is real, yet it is not final. Shankara reads detachment as freedom from craving for pleasures, here and hereafter. Ramanuja takes practice as repeated meditation on the Lord and detachment as turning away from other objects. Madhva stresses that both rest on knowing the Lord's greatness. Krishna asks Arjuna to keep at it without being shocked by the mind's nature.
A shortcut across a lawn. Walk the same line every morning and a bare track appears; stop crossing the other lines and the grass grows back over them. Walking the same line is practice. Letting the other tracks go green is detachment. The mind follows the paths it is used to.
1. Choose one small task today, such as washing dishes or writing a message, and give it ten minutes with your phone in another room. 2. When your mind leaves, notice where it went, then return to the task. Do this as often as needed without scolding yourself. 3. Once today, feel a pull to check or grab something, and wait two minutes before acting. Notice how the pull rises and fades.
The night before his daughter's wedding, a father lies awake. The seating plan, the caterer's bill and a cousin who may not come all circle through his head. The verse would first have him admit what Krishna admits: a mind like this is hard to hold, and nothing is wrong with him for having one. Next, practice. He picks one plain thing, such as his breathing or a short list on paper, and each time the circling starts he walks back to it, however many times that takes. Then letting go: the plans cannot be changed at midnight, and he lets each worry pass unanswered, without feeding it a fresh argument. Ordinary experience bears out the tiredness part: a worn-out mind wanders more and settles less. The verse does not promise sleep that night, and it does not remove his nerves or the real work waiting tomorrow. Long stretches of sleeplessness or constant racing thoughts are something to take to a doctor.
