The story · English

Sita listened to the vanara chief, and when she answered, her voice was full of tears. "What you bring me is joy and pain mixed together," she said. "Joy, because Rama still holds me in his heart. Pain, because he lies awake and weeps alone. Fate rules everyone. It lifts us up and throws us down. It leads the proudest lord away in ropes, the same as the lowest slave, and now it has struck my husband and me. Tell me, how will Rama ever reach the far shore of this sea of sorrow? He is like a sailor whose ship has broken, half drowned in the waves. When will he strike the demon down and level this city of giants? Tell him to hurry. Ten months have gone. Two are left. After that, Ravana will have me killed."

She went on more quietly. "Vibhishana, Ravana's own brother, is a just and wise man. Again and again he has begged Ravana to give me back, but Ravana will not listen. Vibhishana's daughter is fond of me, and she is the one who told me this. Old Avindhva, careful and fair, has warned many times that the giant will fall. But Fate pushes Ravana to ignore the very man he trusts most. As for me, I rest in Rama's love. My heart is true to him, and I know there is no one braver or stronger." Her eyes kept spilling over. Then the vanaras spoke. "When Rama hears what I tell him, he will bring our armies against these walls. Or, my Queen, I can take you away myself, today. I will carry you across the sea and set you down on Prasravana hill, where Raghu's son is waiting."

"How could you carry me?" Sita asked. "The way is long and the sea is wide. Even my weight would be too much for someone your size." Before her startled eyes, the vanaras rose to his true size, as tall as Mandara or the peak of Meru, wrapped in a blaze of light. "Put your fears aside," he said. "I can carry you easily. Trust my strength and my care, and sit happily beside Rama again." "Now I see who you are," she said. "Brave, steady and strong, bright as the god of fire, with feet as fast as a storm. But I cannot fly with you. Racing through the sky, my eyes would dim and my head would spin. My arms would let go, and I would fall into the sea, where the sharks would eat me."

"And there is something else," Sita said. "I will not willingly touch any man but my husband. If the giant forced me into his arms when he carried me off, that was not my fault. What could I do, alone and helpless? Go to my lord. Take him my message, and tell him to end this long despair." The vanara chief was satisfied with her wise answer. "You are right," he said. "You could not face the rushing wind and the roaring waves, and your care not to be touched is worthy of Rama's wife. I only offered out of friendship for you both. But if you will not come, give me some token Rama will know." Sobbing, Sita answered, "The surest sign is a memory only we share. Tell him this: remember the peak of Chitrakuta, the green stream, the shade where we wandered. I lay with my head on your knee. A greedy crow kept pecking at the meat I was guarding."

"I threw clods of earth, but it circled my head and finally pecked my breast. I ran to you, angry and crying, and asked you to punish it. You woke, smiled at me with pity, and saw the scratches from its beak and claws. You set an arrow to your bow and shot it at the crow. That arrow, full of power, chased the bird wherever it flew, until it came back and bowed its head at your feet. You could aim that terrible arrow at a crow for my sake, yet you forgive the one who stole me from you? Rise, bravest of the brave. Come with the thunder of your bow and strike the rakshasas down." Then she took a shining gem from her hair, one her husband would know at once. Hanuman bowed low and tied it on his finger. Once more she begged him to tell Rama to hurry, and once more he promised that no one on earth was Rama's equal, and that he would soon come and destroy Ravana.
