Only You Can Cut It

Bhagavad Gita 6.39

Meaning · English

Krishna, you are able to dispel this doubt of mine completely. Other than you, no one is ever fit to remove this doubt.

Three words carry the verse. Sanshaya is doubt, from a root meaning to lie in the balance, unable to settle on either side. Chhettum means to cut, so the doubt is pictured as a knot to be sliced through, not talked around. Asheshatah means without remainder, with nothing left behind. Arjuna has just asked what becomes of a person who sets out on yoga with faith and then loses the path. Now he says that this question is his own doubt, and that he wants it cut whole. He gives his reason in the second line: nobody other than Krishna is fit to do it. This is Arjuna's view in that moment, spoken by a friend who has run out of answers of his own. It is not a general rule about teachers. He asks two things: that the doubt go completely, and that it be Krishna who removes it. Among the commentators, Shankara reads Krishna as the knower of the self whose word alone can settle such a question. Ramanuja stresses Arjuna's surrender and trust in Krishna as the Lord. Madhva stresses Krishna's supreme knowledge, which no one else matches.

A knot in a fishing line pulled tight by a child's hands only gets smaller and harder. Someone with a small sharp blade slips it under the loop and the line falls free in one cut. Arjuna's doubt is the knot, pulled tight by his own worrying. Krishna is the blade he asks for.

1. Tonight, write down one doubt that keeps coming back, in a single plain sentence. 2. Beside it, write who could actually answer it: a person, a book, a doctor, a teacher. 3. This week, bring that one question to that person and ask it directly, instead of turning it over alone. 4. Afterward, notice whether the doubt feels lighter once it has been said aloud.

A man sits in his parked car outside his father's hospital room, rehearsing a question he has not dared to ask the doctor: is it worth another round of treatment? He has read forums and asked cousins. Each answer pulls him a different way. Arjuna's request shows the next step. He stops circling, names the exact doubt, and carries it to the one he trusts to know. The man walks in and asks the doctor the plain question, then asks for the answer in full, with nothing softened. Ordinary experience bears this out: a doubt kept private tends to grow, and a question spoken aloud to someone who knows is often half-settled by being said. The verse does not promise that the answer will be comforting, or that one conversation will end every worry. It does not replace a doctor's judgment where one is needed. The Gita presents Arjuna's confidence in Krishna as his own, and what follows shows what it leads to.
