Meaning · English
The world of two, beginning from the first great principle, is only a spreading of names. Set it aside, and what duty is left for one whose knowing is pure? All this is delusion; nothing whatever is there. The one who is sure of this, pure, his own throb of awareness unmarked, grows quiet by his own nature alone.
Four words carry the teaching. Nama-matra means only a name: matra is mere, just. Shuddha-bodha is pure awareness, bodha being knowing, the plain fact of being aware. Sphurana is the throb or flicker of consciousness, from sphur, to quiver. Alakshya means without a mark, so the throb is not noticed as an object. Shamyati, to grow quiet, shares its root with shama, calm. Ashtavakra begins with the whole spread of the world, counted from mahat, the first great principle that the old schools place at the start of creation. All of it, he says, is a spreading of names. Take the names away and no second thing stands there. For someone whose knowing is pure and has left this spread behind, he asks what duty could remain. Duties belong to a world of separate things, and he has just said that world is only named. Then he says the same plainly: all this is delusion, nothing is there. He means it in one sense only. The many things are what the mind adds on top of awareness. The one who is sure of this needs no effort to become still. Stillness is his own nature, and it comes when nothing is left to chase. This answers Janaka's long question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's answer is that nothing has to be won. It asks the listener to see how much of the world is made of names.
A child is given clay toys: an elephant, a horse, a bowl. She names each one and fights over which is hers. A potter picking them up sees only clay. The names are the elephant and horse; once they drop away, the game of owning and fearing goes with them.
1. Tonight, pick one thing that has worried you today, such as a person, a bill or a remark. 2. Say aloud what it is without any labels, only what could be seen or heard: who spoke, which words, which paper. 3. Notice, for about a minute, how much of the worry sat in the labels. 4. Then sit quietly for two minutes and let nothing be named.
A man takes down the painted signboard of the family shop the week after it is sold. He has looked at that name every morning for thirty years. Standing on the ladder, he feels the sign was holding something up. The verse speaks to this. Ashtavakra teaches that a world of separate things is only a spread of names laid over pure awareness. Step by step: the man sees the board is paint on wood. He sees that 'owner', 'failure' and 'the end of the shop' are also names the mind has put on the day. The awareness that read the sign each morning is still the one climbing down the ladder. In that teaching, stillness comes when the names are seen as names, not when the loss is fought. Ordinary experience agrees that a harsh label, said to oneself in the dark, often weighs more than the facts it covers. The verse does not promise that the sale stops hurting, that grief will not come, or that money worries go away. It also does not replace a doctor if sleeplessness or low mood lingers.
