For one whose nature is pure, shining awareness, who sees nothing as an object set apart, where is the rule, where is dispassion, where is renunciation, where is even calm? For one who shines in endless form and does not see nature as something else, where is bondage, where is liberation, where is joy, where is sorrow?
Ashtavakra asks a run of questions, each with the answer already in it. Four words carry the first half. Vidhi is a rule, an instruction for what to do. Vairagya is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. Tyaga is renunciation, the letting go of things. Shama is calm, the stilling of the mind. These are the tools of a seeker. Ashtavakra says that for one who is simply pure awareness, and sees nothing as a separate object, none of them has work left to do. Rules, letting go and stilling all assume someone who is tied and a thing that ties. The second half says the same of the pairs we live between: bondage and liberation, joy and sorrow. The text says such a person shines as awareness in endless forms and does not take nature, the changing play of things, to be something apart from it. So nothing stands over against awareness to bind it or to be escaped. It is taught here because Janaka's first question was how freedom is won. The answer is that freedom was never missing. The verse asks the listener to see that the self being sought is the one looking.
A man dreams his house is flooding and wades about bailing water, trying to stay calm. He wakes. He does not need a rule for bailing or a method for calming down, because the flood was never in the room. Practices are the bailing. Awareness is the waking, after which the questions fall away.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes somewhere quiet, with no aim to calm down. 2. Notice one thing at a time: a sound, a thought, a worry. Each one comes and goes in view. 3. Then notice what is aware of all of it. It does not come and go. 4. When you notice you are trying to be peaceful, see that this effort is also being seen. Leave it there and end the five minutes.
A woman sits on a night train after a sharp quarrel with her sister. She keeps telling herself to let it go, breathe, be calm. The harder she works at it, the more the quarrel replays. Ordinary experience bears this out: forcing a calm often keeps us tense. The teaching turns her attention another way. The anger, the replay and even the effort to be calm are all being seen. The one who sees them is not itself angry. For Ashtavakra this seeing is the self, already free, and not something she must produce. She might notice that, for a moment, the quarrel is only an appearance in view, and that the rule she is straining under has gone quiet. The verse does not promise that the hurt will leave or that the sisters will mend. It is also no substitute for a doctor or a counsellor when low mood or panic needs them. It points to the place the struggle is seen from.
