As far as the mind reaches, the round of worldly life is only maya, unfolding. The wise one is free of "mine", free of the maker of "I", free of craving, and shines. For the sage who sees the self, undying and without the burning of sorrow, where is knowledge, where is the universe, where is the body, where is "I", where is "mine"?
Three words carry it. Maya is appearance, from the root ma, to measure out: the world as it is shown and sized up by the mind. Ahamkara is the I-maker, the habit of stamping "I" on body, thought and role. Nirmama means without "mine", the grip that calls things and people one's own. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the whole round of worldly life reaches only as far as the deciding mind, and that inside that range it is maya at work. He does not call it nothing. He says it is appearance, and that it is held together by "I" and "mine". The wise one has no "mine", no I-maker and no craving. The text calls such a person shining, not struggling. Then he asks questions that need no answer. For the sage who sees the self as undying and untouched by sorrow, where are knowledge, the universe, the body, "I" and "mine"? Even the knowledge that got him there has dropped away. It is taught here because Janaka's question was how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that the grip was the whole bondage. When the self is seen, the grip has nothing to hold. The listener is asked to see that "I" and "mine" are made things.
A child plants a paper flag on a sandcastle and says "mine". The tide comes in and the castle goes smooth. The flag was only a label stuck on sand. "I" and "mine" are that flag, and the self is the shore that was there before the castle and stays after it.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you call "mine", such as your chair, your phone or your spot at the table. Say "mine" about it aloud once, slowly. 2. Notice where in the body the word lands: chest, jaw, hands. Stay with that for one minute. 3. Then hand the thing to someone else for the evening and watch what the "I" does. 4. Tomorrow, catch one "I" thought, such as "I am tired" or "I am right", and ask only who is saying it.
A grandmother, sixty-eight, hands her daughter-in-law the kitchen keys after forty years of running the house. Her hand closes on them a second too long. Her chest tightens. Her mind is already listing how the pickle jars will be moved wrong. The verse speaks to that second. It says the tightness is carried by "mine" and "I", the I-maker stamping her name on the keys, the kitchen and the role. Step by step: she notices the tightness. She sees it hangs on the word "mine", not on the keys. She sees the "I" that feels diminished is a made thing, and she opens her hand. The text teaches that the self which watches all this is undying and was never in the kitchen. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: what we call ours is what hurts most to lose. The verse does not promise the ache will not come, or that grief for a lost role will be skipped. It also gives no advice on low mood that lasts for weeks, and for that a doctor is the right person.
