If a dull-witted man gives up restraint of the mind and the other disciplines, he falls at once into daydreams and idle talk. The slow-minded one, though he has heard of That, does not leave his bewilderment. Outwardly he is free of effort and of imagining. Inwardly he still longs for the objects of the senses.
Three words carry the teaching. Nirodha is restraint, from rudh, to hold back: the effort to stop the mind's movements. Manoratha is the mind's chariot, a daydream, the mind riding off after what it wants. Vishaya-lalasa is hunger (lalasa) for objects, the things the senses reach for. Ashtavakra describes a dull-minded man, one whose understanding is stiff and has not taken in what it heard. He has been told that the self needs no practice, so he drops restraint and the other disciplines. Straight away the mind fills with wishful pictures and idle talk. He has heard the truth and still keeps his bewilderment. From outside he looks settled: he is not striving, not fretting, not imagining in any visible way. Inside, the craving is untouched. This is taught because the surrounding verses describe the knower, for whom no rule, renunciation or effort remains. A listener could copy that outer look and take it for the thing itself. Ashtavakra's answer is that the absence of practice is a result of knowing, never a way to it. Stopping the effort without the seeing leaves the craving where it was. The listener is asked to tell apart a mind that is free from one that has only gone quiet on the surface.
A cat sits perfectly still beside a mousehole, eyes half closed, looking asleep. Every muscle is waiting. Its stillness is only on the outside, and the hunger underneath has not moved. So it is with a person who has dropped effort without knowing: calm in appearance, wanting inside.
1. After a meal today, sit for five minutes with no phone and no task. 2. Each time the mind runs off, notice what it ran toward: a purchase, a plan, a grievance, a snack. 3. Do not scold it. Just say quietly, "wanting." 4. In the evening, recall which wish came up most often. Notice whether you looked calm to others while it did.
A retired bus conductor, a month into his first holiday, sits on the veranda in the early evening with his tea. He has no timetable now. Anyone passing would call him peaceful. Inside, he is pricing a new phone, replaying an old quarrel with a neighbour and planning what to say to his son about money. The verse speaks to this moment. It says the quiet he shows is only outward, and the hunger inside has simply gone on without the old routine to occupy it. Step by step, the verse would have him see that having nothing to do is different from having nothing to want. He would notice the wishes as wishes, and not mistake the still body for a still mind. He would also see that the text does not ask him to take up a busier routine for show. It asks him to look at what is moving behind the calm. The verse does not promise that the wanting will stop, and it does not treat restlessness or a low mood that lingers as a spiritual matter alone. Where those persist, a doctor is the right person to see. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a quiet body is not always a quiet mind.
