For the one in whom action has dissolved through knowledge, though he seems to act in the eyes of the world, there is no room left for action, nor anything to say of it. Where is darkness, where is light, where is loss, for the steady one, free of change and fear at all times? There is nothing at all.
Three words carry the verse. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know: here it means seeing the self as it is, not collecting facts. Karma is action, from kri, to do. Dhira is the steady one, a person whose mind no longer shakes. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that when knowing is complete, action dissolves. The knower still walks, eats and works, and the world sees him doing these things. But he no longer takes himself to be the doer, so no action has a hold on him. There is no gap in him where an act could settle, and nothing about it left to explain. The second half goes further. Darkness, light and loss are the terms we live by: ignorance and understanding, and loss. For the steady one, who is free of change and fear, these terms have nothing to stand on. He is unchanging, so nothing can be taken from him. Ashtavakra teaches this because Janaka has been asking what freedom costs and what must be given up. The answer is that the self was never an actor, and never short of anything. It asks the listener to see that the one who watches is not the one who acts.
Picture the sky on a day of clouds, storm and sunset. Birds cross it, rain falls through it, light comes and goes, and the sky is never scratched or emptied by any of it. The knower is like that sky: all of it happens in him, and none of it touches him.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and give it ten minutes. 2. While you do it, notice the one who is aware of the hands moving. Ask quietly: is that awareness doing the task, or watching it? 3. When praise or a small loss comes today, pause for one breath and see what in you stays the same.
A shopkeeper opens up on the morning the rent is due. The shutters rattle up, and her mind is already counting what she must sell by evening. Every customer feels like a verdict on her. The verse speaks to that tightness. It says the knower works as anyone does, and the world sees him working, yet he does not stand inside the work as its owner. For her, that would show first in small ways: she greets the first customer as a person, not as a number against the rent. She does the day's tasks one at a time, without arguing with each sale. When the till is light at noon, the hour is lean, but she is not made smaller by it. Ordinary experience confirms that fear of loss crowds out clear work, and that a calm hand counts change better. The text teaches something larger than calm, though: that the self was never short of anything. It does not promise that the rent will be paid, or that worry will not come. It is not a substitute for practical help when money is truly tight.
