Where is courage, where is discernment, where even fearlessness, for the yogi whose nature cannot be put into words, who has no nature of his own? There is no heaven and no hell, and no freedom while living. Why say more? For the yogi's vision, nothing whatever remains.
Ashtavakra names three qualities a seeker admires: dhairya, steady courage; viveka, discernment, from a root meaning to separate the lasting from the passing; and nirataṅkata, fearlessness. He asks where they are for the yogi. The yogi is anirvacya, unsayable: nothing can be spoken of him, because speech works by pointing at a thing with a boundary. He is also nihsvabhava, without own-nature, with no private nature (sva, own; bhava, being) that could be called brave or wise. Courage is needed against fear, and discernment against confusion. Where neither is felt, the words have no work to do. The second half goes further. Heaven and hell are the two destinations of the one who acts. Jivanmukti, freedom while living (jiva, a living being; mukti, release), is the destination of the one who seeks. Ashtavakra drops even this last one. Freedom is a word for someone who was bound, and the text teaches that the self was never bound. Then he stops: why say more? For the yogi's vision, yogadrishti, there is nothing whatever to grasp as a separate thing. The text teaches this as seeing, not as a duty. Janaka is shown what rests on the far side of every goal he has been taught to want.
A man dreams that he is chased through dark streets. He hides, steels his nerve, plans his escape. Then he wakes. His courage, his hiding place, even the escape are gone, not because he won, but because nobody was ever chasing him. The yogi's vision is that waking.
1. This evening, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. Write three labels you carry, such as patient, anxious, or behind in life. 2. Beside each, notice that something in you sees the label. The label does not see itself. 3. Rest for one minute in that seeing, without adding a fourth label. 4. Fold the paper and put it away. Notice whether the day felt a little lighter for having named nothing.
An old woman sits on a temple step after morning prayer. For thirty years she has practised, and she catches herself counting. Is she calmer than last year? Is she further along than her neighbour? The counting leaves her more restless than the practice ever did. The verse is spoken to exactly this. It names the things she is tallying: courage, discernment, fearlessness, even freedom. It says that for the one who has seen, none of them stands as a possession to measure. Step by step, she notices the scorekeeper. She sees that the scoreboard is another thing she is holding. She puts it down, and what remains is only sitting on a step with the morning light on her hands. Ordinary experience agrees on a small scale: trying hard to fall asleep keeps a person awake. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that her knee will stop aching or that her grief for her husband will lift. It does not replace a doctor if the restlessness is really sleeplessness or low mood that will not shift.
