The steady one does not ask for gain, and does not grieve when nothing comes. His mind is cool, filled with the nectar of deathlessness. Free of craving, he does not praise the peaceful one, and does not blame even the wicked. Pain and pleasure are the same to him. He is content, and sees nothing left that he must do.

Three words carry the teaching. Dhira, the steady one, is the wise person whose understanding does not shake. Shitala means cool: the heat of wanting has gone out of the mind. Amrita means deathless, the nectar the old stories say the gods drank, and here it is what fills that cool mind. Nishkama means without kama, without craving. Ashtavakra tells Janaka what the one who knows is like. He does not ask for gain, and he does not mourn when gain fails. He praises no one for being calm and blames no one for being cruel. Pain and pleasure weigh the same to him. The reason is given in the verse itself: the mind is already full. Craving is a hole that wants filling, and praise, blame, profit and loss only matter to a mind that is still reaching. Ashtavakra's teaching is that the self is already free and whole, so nothing is missing. Where nothing is missing, nothing is left to do. The last line says this plainly: he sees no duty remaining. This is not laziness. The need that drove the doing has been met. This answers Janaka's question about what freedom looks like from the inside. The teaching sets this fullness before the listener as the mark of the one who knows.

A man who has just finished a good meal walks through a market. The stalls call out and the sweet-seller waves, and he does not turn his head. He is not forcing himself past them. He simply has no hunger to answer. The wise one's mind is that fed man, and gain and praise are the stalls.

1. Choose one ordinary moment today when something small is offered or taken away: a compliment, a criticism, a missed bargain. Notice the pull to reach or to flinch. 2. Before answering, take three slow breaths and ask what is actually missing right now. Often the answer is nothing. 3. Speak or act only after that pause. 4. At night, recall that one moment for a minute. Note how long the pull lasted.

A tailor finishes a big wedding order at noon and is thanked warmly. By evening a customer returns a jacket, calls his work careless, and tells others. His chest tightens twice in one afternoon, first with pleasure and then with sting, and both pulls come from the same place: the wish to be thought well of. The verse describes a mind not run by that wish. Step by step, he would receive the thanks without clutching it. He would hear the complaint, check the jacket honestly, and mend it if the fault is his. He would not need the customer to take the words back. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a person who is rested and fed is less easily knocked about by a sharp word than one who is hungry and worn out. The verse does not promise that the sting never arises, that money worries vanish, or that grief at a real loss is absent. It is also no substitute for help when low mood or anxiety has grown heavy. It describes the settled fullness of the one who knows, as the text teaches it.
