Nothing Left to Want

Meaning · English
The steady one does not hate the world, and does not long to see the Self. Free of joy and of anger, he is neither dead nor living. He has no clinging to sons, wife and the rest, no craving for objects of the senses, no worry even for his own body. Without hope, the wise one shines.
Three words carry the verse. Dhira means steady, one whose mind does not shake. Sneha means stickiness, the oil of attachment, from the root for oiling or smearing; niḥsneha is the one with nothing sticky left. Nirasha means without asha, hope, the leaning of the mind toward a future that will fix it. Now the clauses. The steady one does not hate the world, because hatred needs something apart from oneself to push against. He does not set out to see the Self either, because seeking would treat the Self as something not yet here. Joy and anger have left him, so he seems neither dead nor alive: he is not numb, but nothing in him is being pulled about. Sons, wife and the rest no longer hold him by a sticky tie. Sense objects no longer start a craving. Even his own body does not make him anxious. Last comes hope, and the text calls its absence the shining. Ashtavakra says this to Janaka to describe the one who knows, so that Janaka sees what freedom looks like from outside. It is a portrait, not a rule. It asks the listener to notice where hating, seeking and hoping still run in them, and to see that the Self being taught needs none of them.
A coat left hanging in a doorway gets wet in the rain and dry in the sun, and it never asks the weather for anything. Hatred, seeking, and hope are the coat's wishes about the weather. The one who knows is the doorway itself, which was never wet or dry.
1. Tonight, pick one small thing you are hoping for tomorrow, such as a message, a result or a better mood. 2. Sit for two minutes and ask whether you can be fully here without it arriving. 3. Then notice one thing you dislike in the world today. Say its name quietly and watch whether the dislike needs you to keep feeding it. 4. Write down what you noticed in one line.
A father stands outside an exam hall while his daughter sits her paper. He checks his phone, rehearses what he will say if she fails, and cannot stop hoping for the result. The verse would work on him step by step. First he sees that the hoping is a separate act from the standing: his feet are on the pavement, but his mind is in next week. Then he notices the hatred of the possible bad outcome, and the grip of fear for her. Each is a leaning away from this hour. If he lets each lean drop, even briefly, what remains is a man breathing outside a building, which ordinary experience confirms is calmer than a man rehearsing disasters. The text teaches that the one who knows has no such leaning at all, not even toward his children, and that is a settled freedom, not a trick for a bad afternoon. It does not promise that the father stops loving her, that the result will be good, or that grief will not come if it is bad. Nor does it replace a doctor if worry has turned into sleeplessness or dread that will not lift.
