Always we bow to her who shines, who wears the moon's form, who is happiness. Again and again we bow to the auspicious one, who is growth and success to those who bow. We bow to her as ruin and as the fortune of kings, and as Sharvani. To Durga, who carries across hard places; to the essence; to the doer of all. To fame, and to the dark one, and the smoky one, always we bow.

The gods keep naming her, and each name is a different face. Kalyani means auspicious, from kalya, well and whole. Vriddhi is growth and siddhi is success: she is what makes a thing flourish and come out right. Nairriti is ruin and Lakshmi is fortune. The gods name both and tell the Goddess she is the source of each, with no second power behind either. Sharvani is the wife of Sharva, a name of Shiva. The centre is durga and durgapara. Durga means hard to pass, a steep road or a fortress. Durgapara is the one who takes across it. She is both the difficulty and the crossing. Sara is the essence, the hard core of a thing, and sarvakarini is the one who does all that is done. The last names are fame, then the dark one and the smoky one. Light and shadow both belong to her. Medhas reports this to Suratha and Samadhi, two men stuck in their own hard places. The gods have just lost their rule to the two asuras. They have come to the one who promised to answer when they remember her. The Devi Mahatmya teaches that the Goddess is bright and dark, giver of fortune and bringer of ruin, and that the one who knows the crossing is the same one who sets the barrier.

At a flooded ford, a ferrywoman owns the swollen river and also knows the stones beneath it. The same hands that make the water dangerous carry the traveller over it. The Goddess is both the hard crossing and the one who takes you across.
