Gentle and terrible Goddess
Devi Mahatmya 5.11
Meaning · English
To her who is utterly gentle and utterly terrible, we have bowed down, and we bow to her again and again. To the Goddess who is the foundation of the world, to her who is the doing of all things, we bow, again and again.
Three words carry the verse. Saumya means gentle or mild, the quality of the cool moon. Raudra means terrible, from Rudra, the howler, the fierce one. The verse puts both words on one Goddess and doubles each with ati, meaning very or beyond measure. She is not mostly kind with a bit of anger. The gods call her fully gentle and fully fearsome at once. Then come two more names. Pratishtha means a place to stand, from a root meaning to stand firm. The gods call her the footing of the whole world. Kriti means the doing, the act itself, from the root meaning to do. They name her as the one in whom all action happens. The gods are speaking because they need help and are asking who she is. Their answer is that no single word will hold her. She is soft to those she shelters, dreadful to what threatens them, and she is the ground under both. The repeated bowing is the hymn's own way of saying so. The gods do not argue the point. They bow, over and over, because description runs out. The verse asks nothing of the reader except to hear her named whole, with the gentle and the terrible together.
A mother sits up all night with a feverish child, her voice low and her hand cool on the forehead. When the same child bolts toward a busy road, she grabs an arm hard and shouts. Nobody thinks these are two women. Gentle and terrible are two sides of one care, as the gods say of the Goddess.
