Vishnumaya, the Goddess's own name

Devi Mahatmya 5.12

Meaning · English

The Goddess who in all beings is called Vishnumaya: homage to her, homage to her, homage to her, homage, homage again.

This is the first of the refrain that the gods repeat through their hymn. They are speaking to the Goddess on the Himalaya, and they name her by one title: Vishnumaya. Two words carry it. Maya is the power by which one thing appears as another, the force that makes a world seem solid and separate, and holds each creature to its own small view. Vishnu is the one who pervades everything. Vishnumaya is therefore the pervading Lord's own power of appearing, and the gods say it dwells in all beings, not off in the sky. The clauses run simply. She is the Goddess present in every living creature. She is known by the name Vishnumaya. Homage is offered to her, said three times, and then twice more with the word for bowing doubled. Why begin here? The story has just shown a king robbed of his realm and a merchant cast out by his family, both still clinging to what wronged them. The Devi Mahatmya's answer, through the sage Medhas, is that the great Maya binds even the wise. The gods start by naming her at the root of that binding, in every being, including themselves. The repeated bowing is what they offer in return. The text asks the listener to see that the power holding them is not a stranger, but the Goddess the hymn is praising. Nothing here asks for belief beyond that naming.

A child holds a woven blanket so close that it hides the room. The same blanket is what keeps the child warm and safe. The Goddess is both: the covering that shapes what each being sees, and the one the gods bow to.
