Meaning · English
The Goddess who is called consciousness in all beings: bowing to her, bowing to her, bowing to her, again and again we bow. The Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of intellect: bowing to her, bowing to her, bowing to her, again and again we bow.
Two key words carry this. Chetana is consciousness, from the root chit, to be aware, to notice. It is the quality of being awake to anything at all. Buddhi is intellect, from budh, to wake up or know. It is the faculty that sorts, judges and decides. In the Devi Mahatmya the gods say the Goddess is present in every being as both of these. The first line says that what is called awareness in living things is her. A stone does not notice; a creature does. The gods name that noticing as the Goddess herself. The second line says the same of the discerning mind, the part that weighs one thing against another. Neither is treated as a private possession. Both are her, abiding in each being. Why say this here? The gods have been driven from heaven and are praising her so that she will help them. Their praise goes through ordinary human faculties, one after another, showing her already present in each. She is not far off. She is what is looking out through every pair of eyes. The refrain, bowing three times and then again, is the gods' answer to that. The text asks nothing more of the listener than to see it as the gods do: the awareness and understanding one uses every moment are hers. The commentators read these praises as showing that she is the inner ground of every faculty.
Think of a lamp in a room at night. Everything you see, the table, the books, the faces, is seen by its light, though you rarely look at the lamp. Awareness and intellect work like that: the Goddess is the light that every act of knowing is done by.
