The bee and the flower

Nadabindu Upanishad 42

Meaning · English

A bee drinking the flower's honey does not look for its scent. In the same way, a mind that is always fastened to the inner sound does not long for any object of the senses.

The verse gives one picture and then its point. The picture is a bee (bhringa) that has settled on a flower and is drinking makaranda, the honey or nectar. While it drinks, it takes no interest in gandha, the flower's fragrance. Fragrance is what pulls a bee from far off, yet once the bee is at the nectar it asks nothing more of the smell. The point follows. Chitta, the mind with its thoughts and wanderings, is nada-asakta: stuck to the nada, the inner sound, and stuck to it sadā, always. Such a mind does not kankshate, does not crave or reach for, vishaya. Vishaya means the objects of the senses: sights, sounds, tastes, touches and smells, and everything the mind chases through them. Why does the text teach it this way? Its reason is the picture itself. The mind does not give up objects by force. It finds something sweeter and stops looking elsewhere. The sound is the nectar. Sense objects are only the fragrance, the thing that called the bee in the first place. What it asks of a practitioner is steadiness. The word is sadā, always, not now and then. The text claims this fastening is what ends the craving. That is its claim, and only the practice can test it.

A grandmother at a window, hearing the evening rain on the tin roof, is not reaching for her phone or thinking of dinner. Her attention has settled on one steady sound, and the wanting loosens without any effort at denial. Most people know this from a sound they love. Today's understanding agrees with part of this. Attention is limited, and a steady, neutral sound such as rain, a hum or a slow rhythm can hold it and quiet the pull of other things. Many people find that focused listening of this kind settles restlessness. Mindfulness and meditation teaching build on the same observation, that attention rests better on something pleasant than on a battle against distraction. What has no support is the claim that the mind can be held to the sound always, or that craving for the senses ends for good. Nothing in ordinary physiology describes an inner sound as a distinct event. Some people hear ringing in the ears, which is common and has medical causes; anyone troubled by it should see a doctor rather than treat it as a practice. The bee's image is the tradition's account of experience, not a measured fact.
