Meaning · English

Dear one, you are made of consciousness alone, and this world is no different from you. So for whom, and how, and where can there be any idea of throwing away or taking up? In you, who are one, unfailing, still, a clear sky of awareness, where is birth? Where is action? Where is even the sense of 'I'?

Ashtavakra calls Janaka tata, dear child, and then says what he is: cinmatra, consciousness only. Cit is awareness, matra is only. Nothing is added to it and nothing mixed in. The world is not set apart from this awareness, so there is no outside thing to push away or pull in. Heya means what is to be dropped, upadeya what is to be picked up. Every effort to improve oneself rests on those two ideas, and Ashtavakra asks who would do the dropping, by what means, and in what place. Then he describes the one he is addressing: single, undiminishing, quiet, spotless, like open space, which he calls cidakasa, the sky of awareness. Janaka's question was how freedom is won. The answer is that nothing is left to win. Birth, action and ahamkara, the I-maker, which forms the sense of a separate doer, all need a someone who stands apart. The teaching says that someone is not found in what Janaka is. It asks the listener to see that the one who sits here and wants to be freed is the same awareness that is already free.

A clean mirror hangs on a wall. People walk past, a lamp is lit, a cloth is thrown over a chair, and the glass takes none of it up and pushes none of it away. Awareness is the glass: all that appears is in it, and it has nothing to accept or refuse.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with no task and notice every small decision to keep a thought or push one away. 2. Each time you catch one, name it silently as 'taking' or 'rejecting', and do not try to stop it. 3. Ask once: who is the one that notices this sorting? Just look, and leave the question unanswered. 4. Repeat for a few days at the same hour.

A young man is packing to move to a new city, standing over two boxes. One is for what he keeps, the other for what he leaves, and soon he is sorting himself the same way: the shy boy goes in the discard box, the ambitious one in the keep box. He feels tired and tight. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, he sees that the sorting is itself an act, with a sorter standing behind it. Next, he sees that the sorter cannot be put in either box, and that the one watching the sorting is not made of anything he is deciding about. Then the packing goes back to being packing: shirts and books, kept or left on their practical merits. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind that stops arguing with itself, even briefly, rests. The verse does not promise that the move will go well, that homesickness will not come, or that grief and fear will pass. It is no substitute for a doctor or counsellor when low mood or anxiety persists. It speaks of what the teaching says he is, beneath the sorting.
