Whatever you see, you alone appear there. What is there apart from gold in the bracelet, the armlet, the anklet?
Ashtavakra tells King Janaka that whatever he looks at, it is only he who shows up there. Two words carry the teaching. Pratibhasa means appearing, shining forth: from prati, toward, and bhas, to shine. The world is not a second thing facing Janaka; it shines as him. Prithak means apart, separate. Ashtavakra asks what in a bracelet, an armlet or an anklet is apart from gold. Nothing is. The shapes and names differ, and the bracelet is not worn on the ankle. But ask what each one is, and the answer is always gold. In the same way, the text says, tree, crowd, body and thought are each a shape, and what each one is, is the knowing self that Janaka is. The question behind this is Janaka's: how can one be free while still surrounded by a world? The answer given is that the world was never outside the self to begin with, so there is nothing to escape from and nothing to grasp. The verse asks the listener to look at what is seen and find, in each thing, the one who sees. It does not ask him to stop seeing ornaments.
A goldsmith melts down a handful of rings, bangles and anklets. They run into one bright pool. Each piece had its own name and use, yet none was ever anything but gold. The many things seen are the ornaments; the self that knows them is the gold.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes where you can see several ordinary objects: a cup, a chair, a window. 2. Look at one and notice that it is known by you, in your awareness, right now. 3. Move to the next and notice the same thing: seen, and known. 4. Before sleep, recall one person you found difficult today and remember that this person also appeared only in your knowing.
A man stands in a crowded railway station after missing the last train home. The board flickers, strangers push past, and he feels the whole place is against him. The verse speaks to that moment. Step by step: he notices the board, the noise and the irritation are all being seen, and that the seeing is his own. The text teaches that all of it shines in him as gold shines in each ornament. The station does not turn into an enemy and does not turn into a friend; it is simply known. From there he can ask a clerk about the next train without the sense of a world pitted against him. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: a mood colours everything seen, so the same platform looks hostile when we are tired and mild when we are rested. The verse does not promise the train will come, remove his fatigue, or make the night easier. It teaches where the seeing rests, not that the circumstances change.
