Everything Is the Self

Ashtavakra Gita 15.15

Meaning · English

Give up the division that says, this is I, this is not I. Settle it firmly that everything is the Self. Free of fixed intentions, be happy.

Ashtavakra gives King Janaka one instruction in three parts. Three words carry it. Vibhaga is division, from vi, apart, and bhaj, to share out: the act of cutting one thing into portions. Atman is the Self, the awareness in which anything is known. Sankalpa is a fixed intention, from kalp, to fashion: the mind building a plan or a wish and then standing behind it. Niḥsankalpa is its absence. First clause: stop saying, this is me, that is not me. Ashtavakra treats that line as something the mind draws, not something found in things. Second clause: be certain that all of it is the Self. He does not ask for a hopeful guess. He asks for a settled conviction, and he has been building the ground for it in the verses around this one, where he tells Janaka that he is pure awareness and the world is not apart from him. Third clause: with no fixed intentions, be happy. If nothing stands outside the Self, there is nothing to reach for and nothing to push away, so the mind's constant fashioning of aims has nothing left to serve. The question underneath the whole dialogue is how bondage ends. Ashtavakra's answer is that bondage is the division itself. The verse asks Janaka to drop it, and the happiness he names follows from that.

A child chalks a line across the middle of a bare floor and declares one half hers and the other half not. The floor never had a line. It is one floor, and the chalk is only a mark laid on it. The line is the division of I and not-I, and the floor is the Self.

1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit by a window and name what you see out loud, one thing at a time: tree, wall, neighbour's light. 2. After each name, notice the quiet thought that says, that is not me. Just notice it, without arguing with it. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel a small flare of mine against yours (a seat, a spoon, a parking spot), pause for one breath and ask where the line is drawn. 4. Make no plan about it. Only see whether the line was there before you drew it.

A woman stands at the back fence while a neighbour's builder pours a wall footing a few inches over what she thinks is the boundary. Her jaw is tight, her breath is quick, and the words my land and their wall are already running ahead of her. The verse, as the text teaches it, would act at the first step: the sentence this is mine, that is not. Ashtavakra says that line is drawn by the mind. So she may notice the tightening and see that it is the line being drawn, not a fact standing in the garden. Next, with the thought of the other person as an opponent loosened, her voice can come down and she can ask the builder a plain question. The text then names a last step: no fixed scheme about how the afternoon must end, and so an ease that does not wait for the result. Ordinary experience confirms the first part, since a clenched jaw and fast breath follow quickly when we feel under attack. The verse does not settle the boundary. A surveyor, a conversation with the neighbour and, if needed, a lawyer still do that work. It also does not promise the anger will never rise.
