Nobody Is Wandering
Ashtavakra Gita 15.16
Meaning · English
Through your ignorance the world appears; in the highest sense you alone are. Apart from you there is no one caught in the round of birth and death, and no one free of it. This world is only a mistaken appearance, and it is nothing. One who is sure of this, free of longing, a mere shining of awareness, grows quiet, as if he were nothing.
Ashtavakra gives Janaka two claims, then the calm that follows from them. The first claim is that the world appears through ajnana, not-knowing. It is a failure to see, not a sin. The second is that in the highest sense Janaka alone is. Nothing stands apart from him. That is why Ashtavakra says there is no samsari, no wanderer caught in the round of birth and death. There is also no one free of it. If no one was ever bound, no one needs releasing. The next lines call the world bhranti, a mistaken appearance, and say it is nothing. The text does not mean it is worthless. It means the world has no being of its own apart from the one awareness. Then comes the knower. He is sure of this. He is nirvasana, with no vasana, the lingering impressions that push a mind toward wanting. He is sphurti, a mere flash or shining of awareness, with nothing added. He grows quiet, as a flame goes still when the wind stops. Ashtavakra says this because Janaka has asked how freedom is won. The answer removes the question. There was no prison. The text asks the listener to be sure of this, and to let wanting drop away.
A coat hangs on a door in a dim room, and from the bed it looks like a stranger standing there. The heart pounds. Someone switches on the light and the stranger is gone, because there never was one. Ignorance is the dim room, and the wanderers and prisoners are the stranger.
1. Tonight, pick one worry that has a villain or a prisoner in it, such as a rival, a failure, or a version of yourself you dislike. 2. Sit for five minutes and ask only: who exactly is the one stuck here? Look for him directly. 3. Notice what is present while you look: the plain awareness that sees the worry. 4. Stay with that for a minute before getting up.
A woman lies awake at two in the morning, replaying an argument with her sister. In her mind there is a wronged woman, a hard sister, and a story that will not end. Ashtavakra's teaching asks her to look for the one who is caught. She finds the thought, the tight chest and the tired eyes, and she finds the awareness noticing them. The wanderer she feared is hard to find as a separate thing. The wanting to win the argument loosens a little, and the body can settle. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind unhooked from its story rests more easily, and that people sleep badly when they feed it. The text's own claim goes further. It says no one was ever bound, and that the world is only an appearance in awareness. That is the teaching's own word, and it stands as the text gives it. It does not promise the argument will be mended, or that grief over a strained family will vanish. Someone whose sleeplessness lasts for weeks should also see a doctor.
