Nothing Left to Do

Ashtavakra Gita 15.18

Meaning · English

You alone were in the ocean of becoming; you alone are, and you alone will be. For you there is no bondage and no freedom. With nothing left to do or leave undone, move about in ease.

Four words carry this. Bhava is becoming, the world of birth and change, from bhu, to be or become. Bandha is bondage, from bandh, to tie. Moksha is release, from muc, to let go. Kritya-akritya means what is done and what is undone, the whole list of tasks. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that one alone stood in the ocean of becoming before, stands in it now, and will after. Nothing else was ever beside him, so nothing could bind him. Freedom is a word for getting out of a tie, and where no tie ever existed the word has no work. So he says there is neither bondage nor liberation for Janaka. The one who has no tie to cut has nothing left to do and nothing left undone. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. The answer takes the question apart. The question pictures a bound man and a distant goal, and the teaching says that picture is the mistake. The last clause asks Janaka to walk about happily. Ease is the natural state of one with no debt to pay, not a prize for finishing the work.

A man hunts through every room for his glasses. He asks his family, turns out drawers, and grows short-tempered. Then he touches his forehead, and they are sitting on his head. The long search was the only trouble. Seeking freedom is that search, and the verse says nothing was ever lost.

1. Tonight, sit for ten minutes with paper and write what you are trying to fix, finish or become. 2. Beside each line, mark whether it is a plain task for tomorrow or a worry that you are not yet enough. 3. Cross out nothing. Just notice how many lines are the second kind. 4. Then walk slowly for five minutes without a goal, and notice that you are still here when no task is running.

A grandmother sits on the veranda at dawn, sorting rice. While her fingers work, her mind counts: the pilgrimage not yet made, the prayers she skipped, the grandson not yet settled. The rice is almost forgotten. The verse, as the text teaches it, turns her to the counter. The tally is a story told about someone who is behind. The rice is a task with an end. The one who counts has not grown or shrunk by any of it. Seen so, the sorting can go on without the sense of a debt beside it, and the veranda is quiet for a moment. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a tired, anxious mind counts its failures louder than a rested one. The verse does not promise that the rice sorts itself, that the bills go away, or that grief and illness loosen their hold. If the heaviness stays for weeks, or sleep and appetite go, that is a matter for a doctor.
