Meaning · English
Do not trouble your mind with willing and doubting, you who are made of awareness. Grow quiet, and rest happily in your own self, whose form is bliss. Give up meditation everywhere. Hold nothing at all in the heart. You are the self, free already. What will you accomplish by thinking it over?
Three words carry the verse. Sankalpa is willing, the mind's picking of a goal. Vikalpa is its twin, the doubting and weighing of alternatives. Together they are the mind's constant churning. Chinmaya means made of awareness: Ashtavakra calls Janaka by what he is, not by what he is trying to become. Dhyana is meditation, a held and directed attention. Now the clauses. Do not shake the mind with wanting and wavering. Grow quiet and rest in the self, whose nature is ananda, bliss. Then the sharpest line: drop meditation everywhere, and hold nothing in the heart. Even a chosen thought is something held. The last two lines give the reason. You are the self and you are free already. Thinking it over cannot add to that. Why is this taught here? Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that nothing is won, since the earlier verses call the self one and without bondage. Meditation as a method suits someone who is away from home and needs a road. Janaka is already there. The verse asks the listener to stop the effort, including the effort to be still, and to let the knower be what it is.
A man hunts through the house for the glasses sitting on his own head, checking drawers, then thinking harder about where he left them. The searching is the willing and doubting. The glasses on his head are the self, already there, found the moment he stops looking.
1. Pick one quiet ten minutes today, sitting anywhere you like. 2. Set aside every practice: no counting, no mantra, no goal for the time. 3. When a plan or a doubt comes up, do not argue with it. Just notice you are still here, aware, before and after it. 4. When the ten minutes end, notice whether anything was missing.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for his mother's scan results. His mind runs without pause: if it is bad, which doctor, who to call, what he should have noticed last month. Each plan leads to a doubt and each doubt to another plan. His shoulders are tight and he has read the same notice on the wall six times. The verse would change one thing, step by step. He sees that the planning cannot change the result, which is already fixed in the envelope. He lets the questions run without feeding them. He notices that something in him is watching all this, quiet and unharmed. He rests there, holding nothing, until the doctor calls him in. Ordinary experience agrees with a small part of this: a mind that keeps rehearsing worst cases wears the body out without improving the outcome. The verse does not promise the news will be good, remove his fear or grief, or replace asking the doctor questions and acting on the answers. It speaks of what stays untouched under the worry, not of what happens in the room.
