Say it or hear it, dear child, from many scriptures, many times over; still there is no ease in your own self without forgetting everything. Take up enjoyment, action or deep absorption, wise one; still your mind, its every hope thrown off, will find its delight beyond measure.

Ashtavakra opens the chapter by telling Janaka that more teaching will not give him rest. Speaking of the truth, or hearing it from many books, many times, still leaves the self without ease. What is missing is sarva-vismarana, forgetting everything. Vismarana is a letting go of what the mind holds on to: its tasks, its goals, its picture of itself as someone who must still gain something. The second half names three ways people try: bhoga, enjoying; karma, acting; samadhi, absorption. Ashtavakra says to do any of them, and calls Janaka vijna, one who knows. The mind still will not settle by that route. It is pleased only when it is nirasta-sarva-asha, with every hope thrown off. Asha is the leaning toward some later moment that will finally complete things. The teaching answers an unspoken question: why does a man who has heard so much still lack peace? The text's reply is that hearing, enjoying, doing and even absorption all add something, and the self that is already at rest needs nothing added. It asks the listener to notice how much of the mind's effort is hope, and that the rest it looks for comes when the hope drops.

A man hunts through the whole house for his glasses, checking every drawer and coat, while they sit on his forehead. Each search is sincere, and each only extends the hunt. The glasses are the self's ease, already present, and the searching is the hope that keeps him looking elsewhere.

1. Tonight, pick ten minutes before bed and put away your phone, book and any plan for tomorrow. 2. Sit in an ordinary chair and, each time a thought starts with "when I have" or "once I finish", notice it and let it go unfollowed. 3. Do not try to reach any special state. Simply see how many hopes arrive in ten minutes. 4. Afterwards, write down in one line what the mind kept reaching for.

A woman lies awake at three in the morning, phone glowing, reading her ninth article on how to sleep. She has the tips by heart: cool room, no screens, regular hours. Each one has become another task she is failing at, and her heart is quick with the effort. The verse speaks to that moment. It says that more hearing does not bring ease, and that the mind rests when its reaching stops. Step by step: she sees the reading is itself the restlessness, sets the phone down, and lets the hope of sleep fall away along with the hope of fixing it tonight. The text teaches that rest was not at the end of the search. Ordinary experience agrees that trying hard to fall asleep tends to keep a person awake. The verse does not promise sleep, and it does not replace a doctor for long-standing insomnia, pain or low mood, which deserve proper care.
