Meaning · English

Everyone is worn down by effort, and no one knows it. Through this very teaching the fortunate one reaches peace. Whoever is troubled by busyness, even the blinking of the eyes, is the idle one who can carry the yoke. Happiness belongs to that one and to no one else.

Three words carry the teaching. Ayasa is effort, the strain of trying, from a root meaning to toil. Nirvriti is peace, a rest in which the restless pulling has stopped. Alasa is the idle one, someone with no push left in him. Ashtavakra tells King Janaka that every person is tired from straining, and that almost no one sees the tiredness as the cause of their sorrow. People blame their circumstances. The teaching names the strain itself. The fortunate one who takes it in reaches peace. The second couplet pushes this to its limit. Even the opening and closing of the eyelids can be felt as an act, and one who is troubled by that much doing is called idle, yet also fit to bear the yoke, meaning able to carry the whole load. Only that one is happy. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra says it is not won by more effort, because the one who is already free only has to stop adding a doer to the happenings. The idleness meant is a knower who no longer takes the work for his own burden. It is not the laziness of a person avoiding duty.

A man carries a light bucket across a yard but grips the handle so hard his knuckles go white, and his arm aches by the gate. The weight was never the trouble, only the grip. In the teaching, the grip is the sense of being the doer, and the sorrow comes from that.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and do it for ten minutes. 2. Halfway through, check your jaw, shoulders and hands. Notice how much grip is beyond what the task needs. 3. Let that extra grip loosen while the work carries on. 4. That evening, recall one moment you felt tired, and ask whether the work or the clenching tired you.

A woman is packing boxes at midnight before a house move. Every choice feels like a verdict: keep the chipped plates, throw the school notebooks. Her jaw is tight, her shoulders are near her ears, and she is exhausted well before the work is done. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that the packing is one thing and the gripping is another. Next she sees that her hands can go on wrapping plates while the clutching of every choice eases. Then the work goes on without a doer straining at it. Ordinary experience agrees that a clenched body tires faster than a loose one doing the same job. The text itself speaks of a knower who stays still while action goes on, and it teaches this as the way to peace. The limit is plain: it does not make the move easy, lighten the grief of leaving a home, or replace rest, food or a doctor when the body needs them.
