Hanuman Before Ravana

The story · English

Ravana, king of the giants, turned to his son Indrajit, the boldest and bravest of them all. "You have studied war," he said, "and the Asuras and the Gods both know what you can do. Listen to what has happened. The Kinkaras I sent are dead. Jambumali is dead, and everyone with him. The lords who led our armies have fallen to this monkey. The ground is covered with broken chariots, and Aksha lies among the dead. You are the best I have. Go, and kill this enemy." Indrajit heard his father and bowed his head. He wanted the fight, and he left at once. His chariot was drawn by four fierce tigers, tawny-coated, with terrible teeth, and he drove out toward the monkey who had brought Lanka so much grief.

Hanuman heard the great bow twang, and he leapt high off the ground. The arrows were well aimed, but they fell short and harmless around him. Indrajit saw that nothing he loosed could touch this strange enemy, who seemed almost to be laughing at his skill. So he fitted a magic arrow, one that carried a binding spell, and let it fly. The charm struck. It stopped Hanuman's quick feet and numbed his arm. He felt it spread through his whole body, and he fell to the earth and lay still. He knew Brahma himself had blessed that weapon, and out of reverence he would not break free of it. The giants crowded round, tied his wrists and feet with hemp and bark, beat him with their fists, and dragged him off, shouting, to their king.

Hanuman looked up at Ravana, and his eyes burned with anger. The king was covered in diamonds, pearls and gold. Every jewel in his crown was beyond price. Fine chains hung around his neck, and a robe strung with pearls fell from his huge shoulders. He had ten heads, rising like the wooded peaks of Mount Mandara, where tigers live. His eyes were bright, and his fearsome teeth flashed. His great arms wore rings and scented paint, and his hands hung down like five-headed snakes. He sat on a crystal throne set with precious stones and spread with gold-embroidered cloth. Beautiful women stood behind him, fanning him. Four wise counsellors stood near, the way the four oceans surround the land. And for all his anger, Hanuman marvelled.

"What a sight," Hanuman thought. "Such beauty, such majesty, such strength. If he did not scorn what is right, he could rule the whole world, and Indra and the Gods would lean on his protection." Ravana, meanwhile, stared at him, and his fury rose, and every wild guess shook him. "Could this be Nandi," he said aloud, "the one everyone honours, who cursed me long ago on Mount Kailasa, a curse that still follows me? Or is this forest creature an Asura, or Vali's son? Question him. Find out who he is, where he comes from, why he wrecked my grove and fought my captains." Prahasta stepped forward. "Don't be afraid, monkey," he said. "If Indra sent you here, or Vishnu, or Yama, or the Lord of Riches, tell us plainly and you will go free. But lie to our king, and you will die."

"Indra didn't send me," Hanuman answered, "and I'm not here for Kubera or for Vishnu. I am a vanara, exactly what I look like. I wanted to see your king, and it was hard to get past the gates and the guards, so I tore up that lovely grove to be brought here. No demon and no God can hold me with ropes or chains. Long ago Brahma gave me that gift. When his arrow struck me, I knew its power would pass, so I let these ropes stay on, and now I have seen the king. I came to Lanka as a messenger from Raghu's son." Then he turned to Ravana. "My king Sugriva sends you his greeting. I am Hanuman, son of the Wind. I crossed the sea to free the Maithil lady. I searched, and I found her, weeping in that beautiful garden."

"You were raised to know what duty is," Hanuman went on. "Your wealth and power and fame came from long and hard devotion. You should be afraid to wrong another man's wife. Listen to me. No demon and no God can stand against Lakshmana's arrows, or against Rama when he is angry. Repent, and make peace with him while there is still time. Give the Maithil queen back, unharmed, to the husband who grieves for her. She is not a woman to you. She is a snake, and her bite will destroy you and your house. Your pride tells you no one can kill you, because no God or demon can. But Sugriva is neither, and Rama was born of a woman, a mortal son of mortal kings. Remember how Vali fell. Remember your own dead."

"I could tear down your city myself, chariots, horses and all," Hanuman said. "I have the power, but not the wish, because Rama swore before Sugriva that his own hand would end the life of the one who stole his wife. Turn back, Ravana, or you will see Lanka burn." Ravana's eyes flashed. "Take him away. Kill him." Vibhishana was troubled, and he spoke gently. "My lord, take back that order. Wise kings never put envoys to death. The world would despise you. Punish him, but spare him." "There is no sin in killing the wicked," Ravana shot back. "Still, he must not die," said Vibhishana. "Brand him, shave his head, whip him, if you wish. The blame belongs to those who sent him. If he dies, who will cross the ocean and carry your challenge to the two princes?"
