Meaning · English
For the large-hearted one there is nothing to take up and nothing to throw away, whether it is duty, wealth, pleasure or liberation, whether it is living or dying. He has no longing for the world to end and no hatred for its going on. So he stays happy and at ease, on whatever livelihood comes to him.
Three words carry it. Udaracitta is a large-hearted mind, one with room in it, not pinched by wanting. Heya is what is to be thrown away, and upadeya is what is to be taken up. Together they name the steady sorting of life into things to get and things to avoid. Dhanya is blessed, fortunate: the one who is well off. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the large-hearted knower has no such sorting left. Duty, wealth, pleasure and liberation, the four aims by which a life is measured, are not things he reaches for or pushes off. Living and dying get the same treatment. Even the end of the world draws no wish from him, and its going on draws no dislike. Jivika is livelihood, whatever keeps a person going. He lives on what arrives, and he sits at ease. Why say this to Janaka? The chapter is listing the marks of the free one, and the last mark is the end of the sorter itself. The self the knower has recognised is the witness, already whole, with nothing to gain from either choice. Even liberation is not grabbed at, because a wish to be free is still a wish. The listener is asked to see this and let the sorting go slack.
An open window in a quiet room lets in morning light, a breeze, a bird's call, and lets them go again. It does not reach for the light or chase out the noise. The knower is that window: whatever arrives in a life, even death, passes through a room that stays as it was.
1. Choose one ten-minute stretch today where something is likely to go slightly wrong: a queue, a late bus, a slow kettle. 2. Notice the small pull to hurry it along or improve it. Name it silently as sorting. 3. Leave the stretch as it is. Do the next plain task with whatever is at hand. 4. That evening, recall whether those ten minutes cost less than they usually do.
A man sits by his father's hospital bed at three in the morning. The doctors have said it could go either way. His mind sorts without stopping: let him live, let this pass, what if he goes tonight. Each outcome is rehearsed and bargained over. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the knower has nothing left to take up or throw away, living or dying. For the son, that would show first in small things. He would notice his father's breathing, the cup of water, his own hands. He would answer the nurse when she speaks. The bargaining would loosen, though it might return. Ordinary experience agrees that clenching against an outcome tires the body and narrows attention, while the next small task stays doable. The limit is plain. The teaching does not remove grief or change what the illness does, and it does not replace the doctor. The son still asks questions, signs forms and sends for his sister.
