Ashtavakra Gita 17.8
Meaning · English
Fulfilled by this knowledge, with the thinking mind dissolved and the work done, he sees, hears, touches, smells and eats, and rests at ease. His gaze is empty, his effort has no purpose, his senses hang loose. He has no craving and no turning away, because the ocean of worldly becoming has dried up in him.
Three words carry the teaching. Kritartha means one whose purpose is done: krita is done, artha is aim. Galitadhi means one whose thought has melted: galita is melted, dhi is the mind's fixing and planning. Samsara is the ocean of becoming, the round of wanting and getting. Ashtavakra tells Janaka what the fulfilled one looks like from outside. Knowing the self as witness has finished his task, so the mind that used to plan, grab and defend has gone soft. He still sees, hears, touches, smells and eats, and he stays at ease while doing so. His gaze is empty: his eyes take things in without fastening on any of them. His effort is empty too, because nothing is being done to get somewhere. His senses are loosened, not broken. They work, but they no longer pull him. Craving is gone, and so is its opposite, the hurry to renounce, since renouncing is also a grip. The ocean has dried because wanting was its water. Janaka has asked what the free one is like. Ashtavakra answers with marks, not rules. Nothing here is a task for the listener. It describes where the knowing ends up.
A clean window pane in a busy kitchen. Steam, light, a passing bus and a child's face all show through it, and nothing sticks. The pane is not blind or blank. The fulfilled one's senses are like that glass: the world shows fully, and no wanting leaves a smear.
1. Tomorrow, for the first five minutes of one meal, eat with no phone, page or talk. Taste and chew, and watch the room. 2. Notice the moment your mind reaches for the next bite, task or thought. Do not push it away. Just see the reaching. 3. Once this week, sit at a window for ten minutes with no aim. Let sights and sounds pass, and notice that they leave without your help.
A retired postman sits on his verandah on the first morning without a route. His tea is going cold. His hands keep reaching for his phone and for jobs that were never his. Every sound makes him wonder what he should be doing about it. The verse describes the opposite state: seeing, hearing, eating, and nothing reaching after. In his morning that would begin small. He sees the neighbour's scooter and lets it be only a scooter. He hears the pressure cooker and does not turn it into a plan. He drinks the tea while it is hot. The senses keep working, and they stop being errands. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind always grabbing for the next thing tires out, and that a quiet, attentive meal is a different thing from a hurried one. The text goes further and teaches that this ease belongs to one for whom craving has fully dried up. The verse does not promise that his loneliness, grief for the work, or any health worry will vanish, and it does not replace a doctor if low mood or poor sleep lingers.
