Not waking, not sleeping, not opening the eyes, not closing them. Ah, what a state beyond the ordinary belongs to the liberated mind, somewhere beyond telling. The free one is seen at ease in himself everywhere, with a clear heart everywhere. Released from every trace of old desire, the free one shines everywhere.

Ashtavakra describes the mind of a liberated person and marvels at it. Four words carry the teaching. Paradasha is a state beyond: para is beyond, dasha is condition. Muktachetas is a liberated mind: mukta, released, from muc, to let go; chetas, the knowing mind. Svastha is at ease in oneself: sva, own, and stha, to stand, so standing in one's own place. Vasana is a leftover impression: the scent that stays in cloth after the flowers are gone, from vas, to dwell. The first line says the free one is neither awake nor asleep, and the eyes are neither open nor shut. The text does not mean a trance. It means that waking and sleeping, opening and closing, no longer decide who he is. The knower stays the same through all of them. The second half says this shows everywhere. He is at ease and clear in himself wherever he is seen. He shines because no old desire is left to cloud him. Ashtavakra says this to answer Janaka's question about what freedom looks like. It asks the listener to see that the witness is not made by these changing states.

A lamp stands on a table all night. The family sleeps, wakes, opens the door, shuts the shutters, and the flame burns the same through every change. The lamp is the knower; the household's comings and goings are waking, sleeping, opening and closing.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, notice the moment you cannot find when waking turned to sleep. Spend one minute on that. 2. Tomorrow morning, before getting up, notice that someone is aware of the first thoughts arriving. 3. Once during the day, when you shift from one task to another, ask what stayed the same across the change. Stay with the question for ten breaths.

A grandmother sits up at three in the morning beside a feverish grandchild. She is half awake, half dozing, and she cannot say which. Her head nods, jerks up, nods again. Her mind runs between fear and tiredness. The teaching speaks to that moment by pointing at what does not change while she drifts. Step by step: she notices she is not sure whether she was asleep, she notices that something knew both the dozing and the waking, and she notices that the fear is a thing seen rather than the seer. The text teaches that this knower is the self and is already free. Ordinary experience confirms only that attention and rest do blur at the edges, especially when tired. The teaching does not bring down the fever, ease the fear of illness, or replace a call to the doctor if the child worsens. It also does not ask her to stay awake on purpose.
