Meaning · English
He answered: Space, air, fire, water, earth, speech, mind, sight, and hearing are the powers. Once active, they all claim to hold the body up.
The speaker lists the physical elements and the sensory faculties. He includes space, air, fire, water, and earth, along with the functions of the mind and the senses. These different forces are not humble. Each one believes it is the primary strength keeping the physical form intact. They compete with one another, each asserting that it is the main pillar supporting the structure of the living body.
Imagine a group of construction workers each holding up a heavy beam. Each worker believes that if they let go, the whole roof will collapse, ignoring the others. This maps to how the elements and senses view their own role in maintaining the body's existence.
