Goddess as Shadow and Power

Devi Mahatmya 5.17

Meaning · English

To the Goddess who stands in all beings in the form of shadow, bowing to her, bowing to her, bowing to her, again and again bowing. To the Goddess who stands in all beings in the form of power, bowing to her, bowing to her, bowing to her, again and again bowing.

Two words carry this pair of lines. The first is chhaya, shadow. It also means shelter, the shade a tree gives. A shadow follows every body and cannot be pulled away from it, and shade is where a tired traveller rests. The second is shakti, power, from the root shak, to be able. It is the ability to do anything at all. The gods say the Goddess stands in every being in both forms. As chhaya, she is close, constant and sheltering. As shakti, she is the strength by which a creature acts. The word for standing, samsthita, means to be firmly set in place. She is not passing through. She stays. The gods are praising her here because they have been driven from heaven by the demon Shumbha and his brother Nishumbha. They have gone to the Himalaya to ask for help, and they begin by naming who she is. Each line ends the same way. The bow is said three times and then doubled, as if one bow could never be enough. The text teaches that what lets a being move, work and endure is the Goddess herself, and that the shade a being rests in is also hers. The gods ask nothing of the listener except to hear what they say of her. Neither commentator reads these lines in a way that changes this plain sense.

Think of a tree on a hot road. Its shade is where a walker rests, and its roots, unseen, are what hold it upright and feed every leaf. The gods say the Goddess is both the resting place and the hidden strength in every being.
