Meaning · English
The Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of jati: to her, bowing, to her, bowing, to her, bowing, again and again bowing. The Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of lajja: to her, bowing, to her, bowing, to her, bowing, again and again bowing.
Two words carry the verse. Jati comes from the root jan, to be born. It means the kind a being is born into: its birth, its lineage, its class or species. Lajja means shame or modesty, the inner pull that makes a person draw back from what is unworthy. The gods, praising the Goddess on the Himalaya, say she is present in each of these. The first line says that the fact of being born as this kind of being, with this inheritance, is her form. The second says that the blush, the hesitation before a wrong act, the sense of what one's own dignity forbids, is also her form. The refrain after each line is the same bow, repeated until it fills the verse. Why say this at all? The gods are in trouble. Shumbha and Nishumbha have taken their share of the offerings and driven them out. They go to the Goddess and do not list their losses. They praise her, quality by quality, as the one who stands inside every being and every mood. Birth and modesty are in the list because even these, so ordinary that nobody notices them, are not outside her. The verse asks the listener to see where she is already standing: in one's origin and in one's conscience. The commentators read the whole hymn as one idea, that the great Maya shows herself as every state a living being passes through.
Think of the grain in a plank of wood. It was laid down by the tree's growth long before any carpenter touched it, and it decides how the board will bend and where it will split. Birth and modesty work like that in a person: a pattern already running through the whole, the Goddess in the grain.
