Meaning · English
The Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of peace: homage to her, homage to her, homage to her, homage, homage. The Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of faith: homage to her, homage to her, homage to her, homage, homage.
Two more names are added to the gods' hymn, each said with the same refrain. Shanti is peace, the settling of a mind that has stopped pulling in every direction. Shraddha is faith, a word that means trusting something enough to give your heart to it. The old sense is closer to 'placing the heart' than to believing a claim. Samsthita means 'stands fully established': the Goddess is not visiting these qualities but is seated in them. The gods say she lives in every being as peace, and in every being as faith. Both lines end by bowing three times and then twice more, and the repeating is how the hymn gives its whole self over to her. The gods sing this on the Himalaya, after the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha have taken heaven from them. Their praise goes to the quiet things that hold a life together, not only to her strength in battle. The text teaches that the calm and the trust a person sometimes finds are her presence in them. It asks only that the listener bow with the gods and notice where these two already live in them.
A lamp set in a room with the door shut: the flame stands straight and still, and the whole room is lit by it. Peace is that steadiness, and faith is the trust that lets you put the lamp down and sleep. The text says both are the Goddess standing in each being.
