Meaning · English
To the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of radiance: to her, to her, to her, bow again and again. To the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of fortune: to her, to her, to her, bow again and again.
Two words carry the verse. Kanti is radiance, the lustre or loveliness that makes a face, a body or a place pleasing to look at. Lakshmi is fortune: prosperity, good luck, the well-being that gathers around a person. Samsthita, the word for how she is present, means to stand firmly in place, to abide. The gods say that the Goddess abides in every living being, and that she does so in the form of these two things. A being's glow is hers. A being's good fortune is hers. Neither belongs to the creature as its own possession. Each is the Goddess standing within it in that shape. Then comes the bow, repeated three times and again, as a cry of homage that cannot stop at one line. The question behind it is why the gods are praising her at all. They have been driven from their places by the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and they have come to the Himalaya in need. In their hymn they do not begin by asking. They begin by naming where she already is: in everything that shines and everything that prospers. The hymn teaches that what they have lost was never theirs to start with. It asks the listener to see where radiance and good fortune come from, and to bow to that source.
A single lamp is lit in the middle of a room at dusk. Every face around it takes on a warm glow, and the bowls and walls look rich in its light. The glow on each face is not the face's own. In the same way, the gods say, the radiance and fortune of every being is the Goddess herself.
