Meaning · English
To the Goddess who stands in all beings as steadiness, bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, again and again. To the Goddess who stands in all beings as livelihood, the means by which each one lives and works, bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, again and again.
Two praises sit side by side here, and the gods speak both. The first word to take apart is dhriti, from dhri, to hold or carry. It means steadiness: the grip that keeps a person from dropping what they have taken up, the firmness that carries a hard task through to its end. The second is vritti, from vrit, to turn or go on. It means the way a being keeps going: its occupation, its means of living, the daily turning of work that feeds it. The gods say the Goddess stands in all beings in both forms. Each clause of each praise runs the same way. She is the one who dwells in every creature as that quality, and the gods bow to her again and again. Why say this at all? The gods have come to her in fear, driven from their places by demons, and the hymn answers what the Goddess is by listing what she is inside every living thing. The Devi Mahatmya's teaching, as Medhas tells it, is that the great Goddess is no distant ruler. She is present as the very things a creature needs to hold on and to live. A king who lost his kingdom and a merchant cast out by his family are listening to this. The praise tells them that steadiness and a way to live are not only their own possessions, since the text counts them as her presence in them. It asks of the listener only a seeing: that these two ordinary things be recognised as hers.
A beam of timber sits unseen inside a house wall, holding the roof, while the household goes about its day, cooking, mending, selling. Nobody looks at it, yet everything rests on it. Steadiness and livelihood are like that beam: hidden in every creature, carrying the weight, and here named as the Goddess.
