Meaning · English
To the Goddess who stands in all beings in the form of memory: homage to her, homage to her, homage to her, again and again homage. To the Goddess who stands in all beings in the form of compassion: homage to her, homage to her, homage to her, again and again homage.
Two words carry the verse. Smriti is memory, from a root meaning to remember, to call back to mind. Daya is compassion, the pity that moves a person toward another's pain. Rupa is form, and samsthita means standing firmly in a place. So the gods say she is not far off. She stands in every living being as the power to remember, and as the power to feel for another. The verse has two halves, and each ends with the same cry of homage, repeated until it becomes a bow. In the first half the gods name memory. In the second they name compassion. In both they say the thing is hers, present in each creature, and they bow to her there. Why say this at all? The gods are praising the Great Goddess in the Himalaya, and their hymn walks through the qualities of living beings one at a time, finding her in each. The sage Medhas tells this to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant cast out by his family. Both are still held by what they remember. The hymn answers what is working inside such a person: it is her. The commentators read the repeated homage as a full bow, made again and again, not a single nod. The verse asks nothing except to see memory and compassion as hers, and to bow where they are found.
An old neighbour remembers that you were ill last week. Without being asked, she knocks with a pot of soup. Remembering and caring arrive as one movement, and neither was learned from a book. The verse maps to this: the gods say the same Goddess is at work in both the remembering and the caring.
