Right Conduct, Quiet Contentment

Devi Mahatmya 5.31

Meaning · English

To the Goddess who stands in every living being as right conduct, the way things are properly done: bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, again and again bow. To the Goddess who stands in every living being as contentment, the feeling of having enough: bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, again and again bow.

Two words carry the verse. Niti comes from a root meaning to lead: guidance, a sound way of acting, what keeps a person on the road. Tushti comes from a root meaning to be pleased: the settled satisfaction of having enough. The word rupa means form, and the verse says the Goddess stands in all beings in the form of each. The gods say two things. First, the Goddess is present in every creature as the sense of how to act rightly. Second, she is present in every creature as the ability to feel satisfied. Each statement ends with the same bow, repeated until it becomes a vow of humility. The gods say this in a hard hour. They have lost their place to Shumbha and Nishumbha, and they turn to the Goddess for help. Their praise answers a question: where is she to be found? Their answer is that she is not far off. She is already inside every being, in ordinary qualities such as knowing the right way and feeling that one has enough. The two are paired because they steady each other. Conduct without contentment turns grasping. Contentment without conduct goes slack. The gods ask nothing of the listener here. They name the Goddess in these qualities and bow to her in them.

A good meal shows both. The cook follows a sound method, step by step, so the food comes out right. The eater then sets down the spoon, satisfied. Right conduct is the method that guides the hands. Contentment is the settled feeling when the plate is enough.
