Nourishment and Mother
Devi Mahatmya 5.33
Meaning · English
To the Goddess who stands in all beings in the form of nourishment: bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, bow and bow again. To the Goddess who stands in all beings in the form of a mother: bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, bow and bow again.
Three words carry the praise. Pushti means nourishment, the thriving of a living thing, from a root meaning to grow fat and well. It covers food, but also the strength that keeps a body, a child or a household from wasting. Matri means mother, the one who bears and raises. Rupa means form, the shape something takes. Samsthita means standing firmly in, settled and present, not passing through. The gods, as they praise her, say that the Goddess is present in every creature as nourishment, and in the same way as motherhood. The first half names what keeps beings alive. The second names the care that gives life and holds it up. Neither is called a gift she hands out from far away. In the gods' words she is the nourishing itself and the mothering itself, there inside each being. The gods speak here because they are driven from their places by Shumbha and Nishumbha. They have gone to the Himalaya. Their hymn does not begin with her weapons. It begins with what is closest: what feeds, what mothers. The repeated bowing, three times and then again, is how the hymn closes each praise. It asks nothing in these lines. It names her, and bows.
Soil in a field. No one looks at it while the wheat is green, yet every stalk stands because of it, and each plant draws on it without asking. The Goddess, in this praise, is like that: the unseen ground of every being's growth and care.
