Meaning · English
To the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of delusion, bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, bow again and again. To her who presides over the senses of all creatures, and who is present in every being at all times, as the Goddess who pervades everything, bow again and again.
Three words carry the verse. Bhranti is delusion, from bhram, to wander or whirl: the mind going round and landing in the wrong place. Adhishthatri is the one who stands over and presides, a ruler seated above what she rules. Vyapti is pervading, a spreading-through, like water through cloth. The gods bow to the Goddess as the delusion that sits in every living being. They then bow to her as the one who presides over the senses of all creatures. Last, they bow to her as the one who runs through every being, always, and fills them. Each bow is repeated, as in the verses before it. The reason is in the story Medhas tells. King Suratha has lost his kingdom and still longs for it. The merchant Samadhi was thrown out by his family and still cares for them. Both can see the wrong done to them, yet neither can let go. The hymn answers that puzzle. In its teaching, the pull that holds them is not a stranger's trick. It is the Goddess herself, working as delusion. The same power that holds the senses in her rule also fills every being. The hymn asks nothing of the gods except to bow. It names delusion as one of her forms and does not push it aside as an enemy.
A coiled rope lies in a dim doorway and a man jumps back, sure it is a snake. His eyes did the seeing and his mind did the naming, and both slipped. In the hymn, that slip is the Goddess too: the power that holds the senses and the mind, and fills every being.
