Pure Consciousness Filling Everything

Devi Mahatmya 5.37

Meaning · English

To the Goddess who stands pervading this whole world in the form of consciousness: homage to her, homage to her, homage to her, homage and again homage.

The gods are on the Himalaya, beaten by Shumbha and Nishumbha, and they praise the Goddess line by line. This praise names her as consciousness. Two words carry it. Citi means consciousness, the awareness that knows. Rupa means form, the way something shows itself. Vyapya, from vyap, means to pervade, to fill the way water fills a sponge. The first clause says she exists as consciousness itself. The second says she fills this entire world and stays standing in it. The gods do not say she is one being among beings, or a power sitting far off. They say she is the knowing present in everything that lives. The closing line is the gods' repeated bowing, three times and then twice more, the way people bow when words run out. It answers the question the hymn keeps asking: who is this Goddess they turn to when their own strength has failed. Their answer is that she is what makes anything aware at all. The text asks nothing of the listener here beyond seeing her as the gods do. I do not have a classical commentator's reading of this line that I can quote with confidence, so I add none.

A lamp lit in a dark house does not sit in one corner. Its light reaches every wall, every chair, every face, and nothing in the room is seen except by it. The Goddess as consciousness is like that light: not a thing in the room, but what lets the whole room be known.
