She who was served in earlier days by the gods, who sought her shelter for what they longed for, and by the lord of the asuras through many days: may she, the sovereign, be the cause of our good and drive away our misfortunes and dangers. She whom we, tormented by the arrogant daityas, now bow to, we gods, with bodies bent in devotion. She who, when remembered, destroys all our calamities in that very instant.
Here the gods stop praising the Goddess as the power inside all beings and ask her for something plain: help. Three words carry it. Ishvari means sovereign, the one who rules, from ish, to have power over. Shubha means auspicious, the good that comes when trouble lifts. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in, and the gods bow with bodies bent by it. The first clause says she was served before. The gods once took shelter in her for what they wanted, and the lord of the asuras also served her through many days. The gods use this as their ground for asking: her help has been sought before, by more than one kind of person. They then ask her to be the cause of their good and to strike down dangers. The second clause gives the present reason. Daityas, swollen with pride, have been tormenting them, so they bow to her now. The last clause says that when she is remembered, she ends every calamity in that same moment. The question underneath is what to do when you are beaten and have no strength left. The gods answer that they remember her, and they bow. Nothing more is asked of the listener than that. A commentator tradition such as the Guptavati reads the passage with care, but this reading adds nothing to what the gods themselves say.
A child who has fallen in a crowded market does not make a plan. The child calls for the mother, and the calling itself is the whole effort. The gods are that child. Their bent bodies and their remembering are the call, and the Goddess is the one it is made to.
