Meaning · English

The Goddess, who had stepped out from the body of Parvati, answers her question about who is being praised. She says: this hymn is being made to me by the gods. They have been driven out by the demon Shumbha. They have gathered together, and Nishumbha has beaten them in battle.

Parvati has come down to the Ganga to bathe. She finds the gods praising someone and asks who it is. The Goddess who has come out of her own body answers, and this is the answer. Three words carry it. Stotra is a hymn of praise, from stu, to praise. The Goddess calls the whole long hymn of chapter 5 a stotra, and says it is meant for her. Nirakrta means driven out or pushed aside, from nir, out, and kr, to do. Shumbha has thrown the gods out of their own places. Parajita means defeated, from ji, to win, with para, away. It is the beaten state of someone whose win has been taken from them, and here Nishumbha has done it in battle. So the clauses go in order. The praise is hers. The ones praising are the gods. They were evicted by Shumbha. They have come together, which means each one's strength failed alone. And Nishumbha defeated them in a fight. The text teaches why this is said here. Parvati asked a plain question, and the Goddess gives a plain answer. She does not describe her own greatness. She says who is praising and why: the gods have lost their kingdom and have nowhere else to turn. Medhas is telling this to a king who has lost his kingdom, and the story shows that praise rises from people in exactly that condition. It asks the listener only to notice who the gods are at this moment: beaten, displaced and together.

After a flood has taken the fields, the villagers do not go to their separate houses. They gather at the one temple on high ground and ask for help together. The gods, put out of their own places and beaten in battle, gather in just that way and turn to the Goddess.
