Meaning · English
The Milky Ocean gave her a spotless necklace, a pair of garments that never age or wear, a jewel for the crown of her head, and radiant earrings and bracelets. It gave a shining half-moon, armlets for every one of her arms, and spotless anklets. It gave a necklace for the throat beyond compare, and jewelled rings for all her fingers.
Three words carry this passage. Kshiroda is the Milky Ocean, the sea of milk, named here as a giver. Amala means spotless, without stain; it is said of the necklace and again of the anklets. Ajara means ageless: the two garments do not wear out or grow old. Medhas tells Suratha and Samadhi what the Milky Ocean offered the Goddess, and it is a list of adornments from head to fingertip. A necklace. Two garments. A jewel for the crown of the head. Earrings and bracelets. A half-moon ornament, armlets on every arm, anklets, a throat-ornament called the finest of its kind, and a ring set with gems for each finger. Nothing is left bare. Why does Medhas dwell on this? The two listeners have lost what they owned: one a kingdom, the other his family's home. He answers their grief by showing how the Goddess is received. In his telling, the gods and the ocean give what is most their own, and she is honoured in full. The weapons come from the gods; here the ocean gives beauty. The text pictures her as both armed and adorned. It asks nothing of the listener beyond attention to how freely these gifts are given, and to the words spotless and ageless: what is offered to her is without flaw and does not decay.
Picture guests arriving at a wedding, each bringing the best thing their house owns: one a shawl, one a lamp, one a pair of bangles. Nobody brings what is spare. The Milky Ocean's gifts work the same way, each giver offering what is most truly its own to the one being honoured.
