Meaning · English
Vishvakarma gave her an axe, spotless and bright, and many weapons of many shapes, and armour that nothing could break. The ocean gave her a garland of flowers that never fade, one for her head and another for her chest, and a lotus of great beauty. Himavan, the mountain king, gave her a lion to ride, and jewels of many kinds. Kubera, lord of wealth, gave her a drinking cup that never runs empty, filled with wine.
Three small words carry the verse. Ayudha, a weapon, is something you hold in the hand. Kavacha, armour, is what you wear so a blow cannot reach you. Vahana, a mount, is what carries you where you are going. Each giver offers what he is by nature. Vishvakarma, the divine craftsman, gives made things: an axe, many weapons, unbreakable armour. The ocean gives flowers that do not wither and a lotus. Himavan, the Himalaya, gives a lion, the wild strength that lives on his slopes, and jewels from his rock. Kubera, keeper of wealth, gives a cup that stays full. Medhas tells Suratha and Samadhi that the gods hand her the best of their own domains. Nothing is borrowed from elsewhere. The reason this is taught here is the question Suratha is carrying: how can a ruined king and an outcast merchant be helped? Medhas answers that the Goddess is formed from what many beings give, each according to what he has. Her power is gathered, and each offering is real. The listener is asked to notice that no giver here is too small, and that what a person holds, whether craft, beauty, strength or plenty, has a place in her making. Bhaskararaya's Guptavati reads such gifts as the gods' own powers resting in her, and I give that only as his reading.
Think of a wedding where each household brings what it makes best: the potter a set of bowls, the weaver a cloth, the farmer grain. Nobody brings the same thing, and the new home is furnished by all of them. The gods' gifts to the Goddess are like that, each domain giving its own best.
