Meaning · English

Then the war began between the Goddess and the enemies of the gods. Weapons and missiles were hurled in many ways, and the edges of the sky blazed with them. Chikshura, the great asura and general of Mahishasura's army, fought, and so did Chamara, with an army of four kinds of troops. The great asura Udagra fought with sixty thousand chariots. Mahahanu fought with a thousand tens of thousands.

Three words carry the verse. Suradvish means enemy of the gods: sura is a god, dvish is to hate. It names the asuras by what they stand against. Mahasura means great asura. Here it marks rank, since these are Mahishasura's commanders, not common soldiers. Chaturanga-bala means a force of four limbs: elephants, chariots, horses and foot soldiers. Together they make a full army of the old kind. Now the clauses. The war between the Goddess and the gods' enemies finally begins, and the thrown weapons are so many that the far edges of the sky glow. Then the commanders are named one by one. Chikshura fights, Chamara fights with a complete army, Udagra with sixty thousand chariots, Mahahanu with a thousand tens of thousands. The numbers keep climbing. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his family. Both are men who feel overwhelmed. The Devi Mahatmya's own telling is that the Goddess stands alone against every force the asura side can send. The long roll of names and numbers shows how large that force is, so the reader knows what she faces. Medhas tells it briefly and plainly, without lingering on the fighting, because the story is about her.

A single lamp burns in an open field at night, and thousands of moths gather around it until the air is thick with them. The count of the swarm is large, yet the lamp is the one steady thing. The commanders' numbers are the swarm, and the Goddess is the lamp.
