Meaning · English
The great asura Asiloma fought in the battle with fifty niyutas of chariots. Vaskala fought with six hundred ayutas, with many thousands upon thousands of elephants and horses about him. Terrible to look at, he was surrounded by a crore of chariots, and in that battle he fought on. Bidalaksha, too, fought in the clash of arms, ringed round by fifty ayutas of chariots.
The sage Medhas is telling King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi how the war with Mahishasura looked, and here he simply counts. Three more asura commanders come onto the field: Asiloma, Vaskala and Bidalaksha. Each arrives with a number of chariots, and the numbers are meant to stagger the listener. Two old counting words appear. Niyuta and ayuta are large round numbers, ten thousand in the case of ayuta, and the text uses them to say 'beyond counting' while still sounding like arithmetic. Koti, a crore, is ten million. Vaskala gets the most: six hundred ayutas of chariots, plus elephants and horses in uncounted thousands, and then a crore of chariots besides. His look is called ugra, fierce or terrible. The verse names them, sizes them, and says each one fought. Nothing else happens in it. No blow is struck and none is described. Why teach it? Suratha has lost a kingdom and Samadhi has lost his family. Both know what it is to face something far larger than themselves. Medhas is showing how large the opposing force is in this story, so that the Goddess who stands alone against it can be seen at her true scale. The numbers are there for her sake, not for the asuras'. The listener is asked only to hold the picture: an army that fills the horizon, and a battle that goes on anyway. The commentators read such catalogues as a way of showing how much stands against her, and so how much her victory means.
Picture a field at harvest so wide that the far hedge is a thin line, with every foot of it already covered in people and carts. Nobody could count them by eye. The asura roll call works the same way: the numbers are not for adding up but for showing how crowded the opposition is.
