Meaning · English
Kala fought in the battle ringed by chariots, fifty times ten thousand of them, and surrounded by as many warriors again. Other great asuras there, in tens of thousands, hemmed in by chariots, elephants and horses, fought the Goddess in the clash. And Mahishasura himself, in that war, was ringed by thousands upon thousands of crores of chariots, of elephants, and of horses.
Three small number-words carry this passage. Ayuta is ten thousand. Koti is ten million. Maha-asura is a great asura, one of the powerful beings who stand against the gods; verse 2.39 calls them the gods' enemies. Medhas stacks these words on top of one another: crores of crores, then thousands of those. Now the clauses. First, Kala, one of the demon captains, fights with a ring of chariots around him, fifty ayutas of them, and as many warriors again close behind. Second, other great asuras, tens of thousands of them, come with chariots, elephants and horses, and all fight the Goddess. Third, Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, is placed at the very centre of the largest ring of all, so large that the number is no longer a count but a way of saying beyond counting. Why does Medhas bother? He is speaking to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant cast out by his family. Both know what it is to face something much bigger than themselves. Medhas does not hurry past the size of the force. He lets it stand in full, because the account of the Goddess depends on it: the larger the host, the clearer it becomes, in the verses that follow, what her power is. Medhas is not describing the fighting for its own sake. He is measuring the opposition so that the listeners can measure her.
Picture a whole sack of rice tipped out onto a floor, and someone trying to count the grains. After a few handfuls the counting stops and the heap simply becomes the heap. The ring of chariots, elephants and horses is that heap: a number given so the listener stops counting and feels the size.
