Auspicious Refuge of All

Devi Mahatmya 11.9

Meaning · English

Auspicious of all that is auspicious, kindly one, who brings every aim to its end, giver of refuge, three-eyed Mother, Gauri, Narayani: homage to you.

This is a string of names, and each name is a praise. Take the words one at a time. Mangala means what is auspicious, the good fortune that makes a thing turn out well. The first name calls her the auspicious of all auspicious things: whatever is good anywhere has its goodness from her. Shiva, here, is the feminine form of the word and means kind, benign. Sadhika comes from sadh, to accomplish. She is the one who brings every aim, every purpose, to its end. Sharanya comes from sharana, shelter: she is worth running to when nothing else holds. Tryambaka means three-eyed, and she is called by the name as Mother. Gauri means the bright, fair one. Narayani means she who belongs to Narayana, Vishnu, and it is the name that closes each verse of this hymn. The gods speak these lines to her after she has answered their cry. They answer a plain question: what is she, that she should be thanked? They say she is the goodness in good things, the one who completes what is begun, and the place one goes when afraid. Then they bow. The praise asks nothing of the reader except to hear who she is said to be. The Devi Mahatmya's hymn gives her names, not demands.

A lamp is lit in a doorway on a dark evening. The light is good in itself, and it also lets the household find their things, finish their work and walk home safely. The verse names her the same way: goodness itself, and the one by whom every aim is finished.
