Power Behind Three Acts
Devi Mahatmya 11.10
Meaning · English
Power within creation, preservation and destruction, ancient one, home of the qualities and made of the qualities, Narayani, salutation to you.
The gods are praising the Goddess, and this line names what she is to the world's working. Three words carry it. Shakti is power, from shak, to be able. Sanatani is ancient, the one who has always been so. Guna is a quality, a trait that gives things their character. The first clause says that making, keeping and ending are three acts, and one power stands behind all three. She is not one goddess for building and another for breaking. The gods call her the ability itself that does each. The second clause says she is the home of the qualities, and also made of them. She is where they rest, and she is what they add up to. She is not a ruler standing apart from the world's makeup. The gods see her in it, and also holding it. Why say this here? The gods have just been rescued, and they ask what kind of power came to their aid. Their answer is that it is the same power behind everything that begins, lasts and ends. Her saving act is not an exception to the world's order, it is that order itself. What the line asks of the listener is only what the gods do: bow, and name her rightly. The word Narayani and the bow close the line.
A rope is made of strands twisted together. The strands sit inside the rope, and the rope is nothing but them. Yet only the rope can bear a load. The Goddess is like that: the qualities rest in her and compose her, and the rope's holding is the power behind all things.
