Meaning · English
You who are wholly devoted to saving those who come to you for shelter, the poor, the pained and the afflicted; you who take away the suffering of everyone, Goddess Narayani, salutations to you.
The gods name three kinds of people here. Sharanagata are those who have come for shelter, from sharana, a refuge, and agata, arrived. Dina are the poor and low, those with nothing left to stand on. Arta are the pained, from a root meaning to be struck or afflicted. Then comes paritrana, complete rescue, from trā, to protect, with the prefix meaning all around. Parayana means wholly given to a task. So the Goddess is called one whose whole occupation is rescuing. The second line widens the circle. She removes the suffering of everyone, sarvasya, with no one left out. Narayani is her name in this hymn, and the gods repeat it in every verse. The reason it sits here is the story's own setting. Medhas tells King Suratha, who lost his kingdom, and the merchant Samadhi, cast out by his family, about her. Both are the dina and the arta of this verse. The gods have also just been rescued, and they say what they learned: she is not drawn by merit, only by the coming. The verse asks nothing of the listener beyond that. It says where the door is, and that it opens for the one who arrives with nothing. Nagoji Bhatta and the other commentators read the second line as a promise that her help is not limited to the gods who sing.
A night shelter at the edge of a town keeps its lamp lit and its door unlatched. Nobody is asked what they own or why they are out in the cold. Arriving is the only requirement. The Goddess here is that open door, and the broken and the poor are the ones it was built for.
