Meaning · English

Seated in a chariot yoked to swans, taking the form of Brahmani, sprinkling water hallowed with kusha grass: Goddess Narayani, salutation to you. Bearing the trident, the crescent moon and the serpent, riding the great bull, in the shape of Maheshvari: Narayani, salutation to you.

The gods are naming two forms of the one Goddess, each with its own signs. The first is Brahmani. The name ties her to Brahma, the creator. She rides a chariot drawn by swans, the hamsa, Brahma's bird. She sprinkles water charged with kusha grass, the grass used in sacred rites. So she is pictured as a priestess of the creator, carrying purity in her hand. The second is Maheshvari. The name means she of the Great Lord, Shiva. She carries his marks: the trident, the crescent moon and the serpent. Her mount is the great bull, vrishabha. Both lines end the same way, and that ending is the point. The gods call her Narayani whether she wears Brahma's signs or Shiva's. She is not two goddesses or a rival to either god. The text shows one Goddess who takes the shape each work needs, and who is never exhausted by any one shape. This is why the hymn lists them. The gods have just been rescued from the demon Shumbha and his army, and they want to praise her fully. A single name feels too small for them, so they walk through her forms one by one. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see this: the many shapes are hers, and the praise at the end of each line is the same.

A lamp stands behind a pane of white glass, then behind a pane of deep blue. The room looks different each time, but the flame has not changed. The two forms are the panes, the signs they carry are the colour, and Narayani is the one flame the gods are addressing through both.
